American Diesel Locomotive

The American Diesel Locomotive by Brian Solomon,

The American Diesel Locomotive by Brian Solomon,
Introduced in the 1930s, efficient and adaptable diesel locomotives had all but displaced steam locomotives by 1960. This colorful photographic history examines the development, implementation, and operation of diesel locomotives from the gleaming pioneer Zephyrs of the '30s through today's 8000-horsepower beasts. In the course of examining the dawn and preeminence of diesel power, the author offers a glimpse of America's major railways -- both freight and passenger -- in stunning modern and period color photography. Manufacturers like EMD, Alco and GE are included. The final chapter describes the operation and maintenance of modern diesel locomotives, and an appendix lists where rail fans can see restored examples of early diesels today.

Diesel Modeler's Guide by Randy Lee, X
Diesel Modeler's Guide by Randy Lee, X
Diesel locomotives first began appearing on American railroads more than 65 years ago, and it wasn't long before they began to appear on model railroaders' layouts. Crude by today's standards, those early replicas are now prized collectibles. By the 1950s, injection-molding techniques made it possible to offer fairly accurate models at a reasonable price. The quantity and quality of models have continued to improve, allowing accurate re-creations in each modeler's design. Diesel Modeler's Guide, Volume 2 provides the reader with more useful prototype information, as well as the latest tips, including techniques and insights from noted modelers. The articles are from issues of "Model Railroading" magazine published in 1996 and 1997, and are grouped by railroad to provide a handy reference guide.
